Huatulco, MexicoQuetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent god of Mesoamerica, is said to have appeared on the Pacific coast of southern Mexico around 2,000 years ago and planted a piece of wood in the shape of a cross on the beach. Re-discovered in recent years, Huatulco (wah-tool-co), one of Mexico's newest resort projects, is quickly on its way to rivaling the country's better known recreation zones of Cancun and Acapulco. With each new resort development, planners experiment with and perfect their designs, and Huatulco has benefited from its predecessors. Pristine beaches, jungle landscapes and luxury hotels is what Huatulco offers travelers. Slow-paced and still relatively undiscovered, the Bays of Huatulco enjoy the most modern infrastructure on Mexico's Pacific coast. Scattered across 20 miles of ideal Pacific coastline in the state of Oaxaca, the resorts are set along one of nine bays and 36 beaches that lend a unique quality to each resort. The principal bays are Bahia de Santa Cruz, Bahia Chahue, and Bahia Tangolunda.

There are golf courses, horse stables, tennis courts, marinas, trendy restaurants and fabulous shopping - pretty much everything you'd expect out of a tropical beach vacation. The Huatulco area is also known for its ecotourism. River rafting, rappelling, snorkeling, diving, boat cruises to virgin bays and hiking jungle trails are all offered. Near the city center there is also an ecological park, Rufino Tamayo.
